Cardboard Wardrobe Boxes for Moving & Storage
Wardrobe boxes are tall cardboard boxes with a hanging rail, used to move and store clothes while they stay on their hangers. Garments transfer straight from a wardrobe into the box, with no folding and no unpacking a pile of shirts at the other end.
Packaging Express wardrobe boxes are made from 150 K/T double wall BC flute cardboard with an approximate 7mm wall thickness. Each box has a hanging rail, a safety bar to lock the hangers in place, cut out carry holes and a hinged access door. They work as wardrobe storage boxes as well as moving boxes, and are supplied flat packed in packs of 5, with the rails packed separately, in standard and XL heights.
What are wardrobe boxes?
A wardrobe box is a garment box: a tall carton with a rail across the top, so clothing hangs inside exactly as it does in a wardrobe.
That is the difference from a standard moving box. An ordinary carton means taking everything off its hangers, folding it, packing it, then hanging it again later. A wardrobe box skips all of that.
They are tall because garments need to hang clear of the base, and double wall because a box full of clothing is heavier than it looks and has to hold its shape while it is carried and stacked.
What are wardrobe boxes used for?
- House moves, for everything currently hanging in a wardrobe
- Suits, formalwear and dresses, where creasing matters
- Coats and jackets, bulky and awkward to fold
- Seasonal clothing, using them as wardrobe storage boxes between seasons
- Self storage, where clothes may sit for months
- Removal companies, as standard kit for any move involving clothes
- Clothing retailers moving stock on hangers
How do wardrobe boxes work?
- Assemble the box. Fold the base flaps and seal them with packaging tape.
- Fit the hanging rail. Insert the rail supplied with the box across the top.
- Transfer the clothes. Lift garments straight from the wardrobe, still on their hangers, and onto the rail through the hinged door.
- Secure and close. Use the safety bar to lock the hangers in place, then close the box.
How to pack a wardrobe box
- Leave the clothes on their hangers. That is the entire point of the box.
- Do not overfill the rail. Garments should hang with a little space between them, or they crease against each other.
- Group similar items together. One box for suits, another for coats, makes unpacking quicker.
- Keep heavier garments towards the centre so the weight sits over the base.
- Use the safety bar to stop hangers sliding and bunching in transit.
- Keep the box upright. Laid flat, the clothes end up in a heap at one end.
- Label it with the room or wardrobe it came from.
Shoes, folded knitwear and accessories are better off in a standard carton.

Measure your longest garment on its hanger, from the hook to the hem, and check it against the internal height before ordering. The XL gives an extra 285mm of hanging depth, so it is the one for full-length coats, dresses and gowns.
How many you need depends on how much hanging clothing you have. Measure the width of rail you need to clear and work from that, allowing a spare if you are clearing several wardrobes.

Wardrobe boxes are the better choice for clothes already on hangers. Standard moving boxes are better for folded clothing, linen and general belongings.
Wardrobe boxes for moving house
Clothing is one of the more tedious parts of any move, and wardrobe boxes for moving take most of the work out of it. A wardrobe can be emptied quickly without removing and refolding every garment.
They also work as a temporary wardrobe. If the new place is not ready, or the bedroom furniture arrives last, clothes can stay hanging in the box, with the hinged door giving access.
Professional removal companies use them as standard for exactly these reasons. If you are packing the rest of the house yourself, pair them with double wall cardboard boxes for heavier items and removal kits for everything else.
Wardrobe storage boxes
The same box works for storage as well as transit. Wardrobe storage boxes keep seasonal clothing on its hangers rather than folded in a bag or a loft, which matters for anything that creases or loses its shape.
Typical uses include winter coats through summer, formalwear between occasions, and self storage during a renovation or a gap between properties. The hinged door means you can reach a single garment without unpacking the lot.
Keep stored boxes dry, upright and off the floor. Unused boxes stay flat packed, so they take up very little space in the meantime.
Why choose double wall wardrobe boxes?
The board is 150 K/T double wall BC flute at approximately 7mm, roughly twice the thickness of single wall board. A wardrobe box carries its load from a rail at the top, so the walls need to stay rigid rather than bow under the weight. The practical features matter just as much:
- Hanging rail so garments stay on their hangers
- Safety bar that locks hangers in place in transit
- Cut out carry holes on a box this size
- Hinged door for loading and for access once packed
- Warning labels printed on the box
- Flat packed, assembled with tape, no tools needed

Frequently asked questions
What are wardrobe boxes?
Tall cardboard boxes with a hanging rail, used to move and store clothes on their hangers. Packaging Express wardrobe boxes are 150 K/T double wall BC flute cardboard with a safety bar, cut out carry holes and a hinged access door.
Can clothes stay on hangers in a wardrobe box?
Yes, that is what the box is for. Garments hang from a rail inside, and a safety bar locks the hangers in place so they do not slide about in transit.
What clothes can go in a wardrobe box?
Anything that hangs: shirts, dresses, suits, jackets, coats, trousers and formalwear. Folded knitwear, shoes and accessories pack more efficiently in a standard carton.
Are wardrobe boxes good for moving house?
Yes. Wardrobe boxes for moving let you empty a wardrobe straight into the box without folding anything. They are widely used as house move boxes and by removal companies because clothes can remain on their hangers during transit.
What size wardrobe box do I need?
Standard is 508 x 457 x 960mm and XL is 508 x 457 x 1245mm. Measure your longest garment on its hanger and check it against the internal height. Choose XL for full-length coats, dresses and gowns.
How many wardrobe boxes do I need?
It depends on how much hanging clothing you have. Measure the width of rail you need to clear and work from that. Boxes come in packs of 5.
Do wardrobe boxes come with hanging rails?
Yes. The rail is supplied with the box, packed separately, and fits across the top during assembly.
Are wardrobe boxes double walled?
Yes. They are 150 K/T double wall BC flute board at approximately 7mm, which gives the rigidity a garment box needs when it is carried and stacked.
Can wardrobe boxes be used for storage?
Yes. Wardrobe storage boxes suit seasonal clothing, formalwear between occasions and self storage. Keep them dry, upright and off the floor.
Are wardrobe boxes reusable?
Usually, if kept flat and dry between moves. Check the base flaps, carry holes and rail fittings before reusing a box, as tape and handling weaken the board over time.
Are cardboard wardrobe boxes recyclable?
Yes. They are made from sustainably sourced recycled material and are 100% recyclable. Flatten the box and set the plastic rail aside for separate disposal.
